Raw magnesite is the first input of calcining and refractory plants. The quality of what goes into the kiln directly decides the quality of what comes out. Before you start working with a supplier, we recommend clarifying the six points below.
1. Chemical analysis
Ask for MgO, SiO₂, CaO, Fe₂O₃ and loss on ignition. When comparing two suppliers, make sure the values are given on the same basis (raw or calcined); otherwise it is very easy to reach the wrong conclusion.
2. Consistency
One good analysis is not enough. What really matters is how much the values change from shipment to shipment. Kiln settings are much easier to manage with a consistent raw material.
3. Grain size
Grain size should suit your kiln type and process. At our Ballık site we prepare two sizes: 2–10 cm raw magnesite and 0.5–2 cm fine-grained raw magnesite. Size distribution and the share of fines are also worth discussing.
4. Cleanliness and moisture
Clay, dust and moisture add useless weight to every load and raise energy use in the kiln. Washed and sorted ore has a clear advantage here.
5. A representative sample
Before deciding, test a representative sample taken from different points of the stockpile in your own laboratory. If possible, start with a small trial shipment.
6. Capacity and shipping
Discuss in advance whether the supplier’s production capacity and stock can cover your needs through the season, and the terms for shipping within Türkiye or abroad. Allow in your planning for the fact that open-pit production can be affected by the weather.
