Incoterms are the international delivery rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The current version is Incoterms® 2020. For bulk cargo such as magnesite, choosing the right rule makes prices comparable and prevents disputes during shipment.

RuleWhen does risk pass to the buyer?Note
EXWWhen goods are made available at the seller’s premises, not loadedLoading and export clearance are the buyer’s
FCAOn delivery to the carrier at the named placeSuits road and container transport; seller clears export
FOBWhen goods are loaded on board at the port of shipmentSea and inland waterway only
CFRAs in FOB, on loadingSeller pays the freight
CIFAs in FOB, on loadingSeller pays freight and minimum-cover insurance
DAPAt destination, ready for unloadingBuyer clears import

What to watch for with bulk cargo

  • Quantity tolerance: how far the delivered tonnage may deviate
  • How weight is determined: weighbridge or draft survey on the vessel
  • Where samples are taken and at which point the analysis certificate applies
  • Moisture: whether pricing is per wet or dry tonne

Which rule when?

For road shipments within Türkiye and to neighbouring countries, FCA or DAP is usually preferred; for exports by sea, FOB, CFR or CIF. EXW is generally not recommended for exports, because the buyer would have to handle export clearance in the seller’s country.
